Switzerland is a landlocked country located in Western and Central Europe and is a federal parliamentary republic that consists of 26 cantons. It has a population of around 8 million people and a total area of 41.285 square kilometres. Switzerland is bordered by Germany to the north, France to the west, Italy to the south and Austria and Liechtenstein to the east.
Switzerland is the home of the Sennenhund(Swiss mountain dogs) and the famous Saint Bernard. There are four breeds of Sennenhund that range from medium size to very large. All four of them are well build and have a unique tricolor coat. The two larger breeds have a more calm temperament while the two smaller ones are more nimble. The Saint Bernard was specially bred for rescue missions and has become widely known though movies, cartoons, and tales told by the alpine rescues. In the 17th century this breed was trained and taught by the monks from the Saint Bernard Shelter (from where it gets its name), to rescue people caught under avalanches. There are records that over 2000 people were saved by the dogs.
