Breed history:
It is an old breed related to the Bloodhound. It was raised for hunting otters. Because today hunting otters is forbiden, it is used less for hunting other animals and more as a pet.
Description:
It is a large-sized, strong, brawny dog, long rather than tall. The head is big, narrow, with the muzzle equal in length to the skull, with a big, black nose. The eyes are small, deeply-set and dark. The ears are big, long, drooping and covered with long hair. The tail is long and rather bushy. It has strong legs, big paws with an interdigital membrane. The fur is double-layered, with a short, soft, oily inner layer and an outer layer of rather long, rough hair (approximately 15 cm), with long hair on the face, forming the moustache and beard. The hair is slightly wavy, forming a waterproof coat, characteristic for this breed. The colours are varied, caracteristic for hunting dogs (grey, blue, straw-yellow, brown, black, fawn) and combinations of these colours.
Personality:
It is a dog with a very well-developed sense of smell, it is noisy, intelligent, jolly, friendly and well-balanced. It gets along well with everybody: its master, strangers and children. It accepts other dogs and other animals.
Grooming:
This dog's fur must be brushed and combed occasionally, not to ruin its natural look.
Living conditions:
It is a dog resistant to weather changes, which likes to live outdoors, in a fenced space, where it can move freely, but it can also adapt to a flat, if it can take its daily exercise that will keep it calm afterwards. It needs socialization and training.
Training:
It is a rather hard to train dog, but with a consistent, well-balanced, firm training, without being rough or severe, good results can be obtained.
Usefulness:
It is a good hunting and tracking dog and also a lovely companion.
